LEGAL

25 km/h limit. Throttle under control.

Speed limit
25 km/h (adjustable)
Throttle
off, or up to 6 km/h
After a restart
stays LEGAL
How the return to LEGAL works

Every ride begins in LEGAL mode. Nothing to remember, nothing to dig out of the display menu. You choose FULL deliberately, for a single ride, and when something goes wrong, the default is whatever is safe.

25 km/hDefault LEGAL limit. You can change it in the panel.
AUTO ×2Speed limit and throttle limit return to LEGAL at every start. Each AUTO can be switched off on its own.
Fail‑safePower loss, a failed write, a device restart: always LEGAL with the throttle cut.

FULL mode

Unlimited speed

APIOLI LINK ONE unlocks the 45 km/h throttle limit. Both throttle and pedal assist keep working at higher speeds.

I want APIOLI LINK ONE

Throttle + pedal assist

60–70+km/h

Throttle stays active. Assist keeps going.

  • 45 km/h throttle limit unlocked
  • Both throttle and pedal assist
  • Verified on the Bafang M560

Achievable speed depends on the motor, battery, gearing and riding conditions. Off public roads only.

Features

Designed so you never have to remember

LEGAL ↔ FULL

Switch however suits you

From your phone, with a handlebar button, or with your own combination of 3 to 8 UP/DOWN presses on the bike's display. Set the LEGAL ↔ FULL switching combination in the panel.

Panic mode

A separate shortcut straight to LEGAL

You have an independent, configurable emergency shortcut: press only DOWN on the handlebar several times in a row to switch the bike to LEGAL quickly — even while riding. Turn it on or off in the panel and set the number of presses from 3 to 9.

Throttle

Throttle under control

In LEGAL the throttle is off, or works up to 6 km/h or up to the LEGAL limit. Above the threshold it is cut, and returns only once you slow down.

FULL

Speed unlock, no BESST

Lift the 25 km/h limit straight from your phone, with no laptop, cable or programmer. Every write is verified by reading it back. For riding off public roads only.

FULL

Limp mode under control

When the battery runs low, a Bafang motor limits its own power. The panel shows the threshold read from the controller and lets you lower it or restore the factory value. The cell-protection thresholds stay untouched.

Battery

Learns your battery pack

It detects a full battery and a top-up between rides on its own. On rides that start from a full charge it learns your pack's voltage curve and real capacity, and the panel shows the learning progress. Supports 13S and 14S packs from 2 to 40 Ah.

02 · The phone panel

Everything the display leaves out

You open it right on the bike, in your phone's ordinary browser. No account, nothing to install, no internet.

03 · Motor software

New motor software
straight from your phone

Pick a version from the library and write it to the Bafang controller through APIOLI LINK ONE. No laptop, no programming cable and no taking the motor out.

A software library in the panel

The panel reads the controller's hardware and current version, then shows a list of images from our server, sorted by motor. Each image has a description and a clear note on whether it fits your controller.

  • Factory Bafang versions and our own versions in one place, with search
  • The image matching the controller's current version is highlighted, and one that does not fit cannot be picked
  • Before writing, the device checks the file (checksums and SHA-256) and saves a copy of the controller settings
  • While it runs you see every step and the progress in percent

APIOLI 50 A software is already available for the Bafang M620, instead of the factory 30 A. You write it from the panel in about 5 minutes. We are still working on APIOLI software for the M560. For now, only original Bafang versions are available for the M560.

You flash at your own risk. Before writing another version, have the BIN file of exactly the version that is in the controller now. If something goes wrong, e.g. the controller has a locked bootloader that rejects every other image, only that file can bring the motor back. Software cannot be read or copied out of the controller, so check before flashing that your version is in the library. If it is not, write to us at contact@apioli.com.

Included in the device price for current buyers. Over time this feature may require an extra fee.

Honestly

What APIOLI LINK ONE is, and what it isn't

What it does

Changes how the bike behaves

It makes the bike behave like a pedelec: assistance cuts off at 25 km/h, and the bike doesn't drive from the throttle alone. It also has an immobiliser: a separate custom display-button code cuts the throttle and reports 0% battery to the controller while locked. This indication does not change the battery pack's actual state of charge.

What it doesn't

It doesn't change the motor

It doesn't change the motor's rated power or nameplate. The Bafang M560 is a 750 W motor and the M620 a 1000 W one, while the rules (in Poland: Art. 2 pt 47 of the Road Traffic Act, and the EN 15194 standard) describe a bike with a drive of up to 250 W rated continuous power. The formal assessment of a vehicle is up to the authorities and expert witnesses. If you need legal certainty, you need a 250 W motor. The rules quoted here are Polish; check the law where you ride.

FULL mode

Off public roads only

Private land, forest trails, your own property. On public roads the traffic rules apply, and responsibility for how the device is used lies with the user.

FAQ

Common questions

Is my bike legal once this is installed?

We don't promise that. Details in “What APIOLI LINK ONE is, and what it isn't”.

Do I need BESST or a laptop?

No. You change the speed from your phone, in the device's panel. No laptop, cable or programmer needed. Tested on the Bafang M560 and M620.

Does the throttle still cut out at 45 km/h?

No. With the limit unlocked, the throttle keeps working at higher speeds. Verified on the Bafang M560. The 10–45 km/h range in the panel is for setting the LEGAL limit. See the Unlimited speed section for details.

Can I set 32 instead of 25 km/h?

Yes. The LEGAL mode limit can be set from 10 to 45 km/h, up to the controller's maximum. The default 25 km/h matches the pedelec assistance limit; the name LEGAL does not make a higher setting lawful. Choose another value only where permitted or off public roads. With the default limiting method, a changed LEGAL limit takes effect immediately, without restarting the controller.

What is limp mode, and can it be switched off?

It's a safeguard in the Bafang motor: when the battery drops below a threshold, the controller sharply limits current (on the tested bike from 25% battery, from 25 A down to 5 A). In the service part of the panel you can lower the threshold at which the controller limits power, and restore the factory value any time. The change takes effect from the next bike power-up. The panel does not offer switching it off completely: on the M560, a threshold of 0 made the controller limit assistance even on a full battery. The under-voltage thresholds that protect the cells are out of the device's reach and stay untouched. Riding “to zero” still shortens battery life, so do it deliberately.

For advanced users there is also optional battery emulation: the device supplies the controller with a substitute charge level when the bike would otherwise drop into limp mode. It is off by default and doesn't replace the BMS.

Do I need to restart the bike after changing the speed limit?

On the tested M560, no. A speed limit change takes effect immediately, including on newer controllers, for both pedal assist and the separate throttle limit. With the optional standard method that writes the limit directly to the controller, some other motors may need a restart. It is not required on every motor.

Which motors are supported?

Tested and recommended: Bafang M560 and M620. You can also buy the device for other Bafang motors if your bike has exactly the same display and throttle connector types. Compare them with the photos in the guide and include your model in the application. We have not yet tested the other models.

Do I need internet or an app?

Riding and using the panel need no internet or separate app. You only need your phone's browser connected to the device. When your phone has internet, the panel checks the update server. Diagnostic log uploads to the server are on by default; you can switch them off in Advanced settings. What the logs contain is described in the privacy policy. No account is needed.

Do updates install automatically?

No. The panel checks for a new version when opened and again during longer sessions. It shows what changed, progress and verifies the version after restart, and installation starts only when you choose it, with the bike stationary. Your phone then needs internet and a Wi‑Fi connection to the device.

Can I damage anything on my bike?

Every write to the controller is verified by reading it back, and you can save the configuration to a file. The device never touches the cell under-voltage thresholds. Still, this is a prototype, and modifying a bike's electronics is at your own risk.
